Desert Falcons Water Training-18 July 2026 | Welcoming New Paddlers at Deira Creek

Following two successful training sessions after returning to the water, the Desert Falcons continued building momentum on Saturday evening, 18 July 2026, with another productive session at QD’s, Deira Creek.

This session was especially encouraging as it welcomed several new paddlers into the boat while also celebrating the return of a familiar face. More than simply improving technique, the evening demonstrated what makes Desert Falcons unique—a team that continues to grow by sharing experience, supporting newcomers and enjoying every journey together.

A Session Focused on Growth

Unlike previous sessions that concentrated primarily on rebuilding rhythm after the team’s extended break, this training shifted towards introducing new paddlers to the fundamentals of dragon boating.

With so many newcomers on board, experienced paddlers naturally took on mentoring roles—helping explain boat etiquette, paddle timing and the importance of moving together as one crew.

Rather than focusing solely on speed, the objective was to ensure every paddler became comfortable with the basics:

  • correct paddling posture;
  • synchronising with the stroke pair;
  • listening to commands from the steerer;
  • understanding crew communication;
  • enjoying the experience while learning.

For many of the newcomers, it was their first opportunity to experience the unique feeling of a dragon boat moving efficiently through the water.

Building More Than a Team

One of Desert Falcons’ greatest strengths has always been its welcoming culture.

Every experienced paddler was once a beginner, and every training session presents an opportunity to pass on knowledge to the next generation of teammates.

The evening reflected this perfectly. New friendships were formed, confidence grew with every paddle stroke and another group of paddlers became part of the Desert Falcons story.

The return of Elvie alongside the arrival of several new members also demonstrated that the team continues to evolve while maintaining its supportive and inclusive spirit.

Training Progress

he 18 July evening session covered approximately 3 kilometres along the calm waters of Deira Creek, with both IS and Tina recording their activities on Strava. Although the overall distance was shorter than previous sessions, the objective of the evening was never about speed or endurance.

With six new paddlers joining the boat for the first time, the crew deliberately maintained a controlled pace to allow beginners to learn the fundamentals of dragon boating, including paddle timing, boat balance and crew communication. Sessions like these are essential in building confidence before gradually introducing higher-intensity drills.

Tina2.91 km34:3552:585.1 km/h

The close similarity between both recordings confirms a consistent training route and steady crew movement throughout the session. More importantly, the evening successfully achieved its primary goal : introducing new paddlers to the sport while continuing to strengthen the teamwork and supportive culture that define the Desert Falcons.
